Anthony Panayi (19 years old) from Tooting London is one of first Barista apprentices. After finishing his A-Levels Anthony choose the vocational way to kick start his career and continue his education. Although he could have gone to a traditional Uni he really wants to build a retail career with us & it’s a pleasure working with him. Anthony says:
‘I was very excited about joining the Starbucks apprenticeship programme from day one. I knew that I was going to learn a lot about coffee, acquire great barista and customer service skills, but I didn't expect that I would learn so much more...
Firstly, I seriously underestimated the amount of knowledge you could gain about coffee and what an interesting product it is. It’s funny to find out how the history of coffee is linked to the history of mankind, and how far back it goes. I have gained great barista skills and discovered the art and passion that goes into making the prefect drink.
I was very pleased to realise that Starbucks' values were, in many ways, aligned with mine. Partners (employees) have a strong sense of integrity, respect and pride in what they do, which is really inspiring.
More importantly I have learnt a lot on a personal level; I'm doing my apprenticeship in a busy store with a very diverse team and customers from all walks of life which is such a great environment to work in as you get to learn to adapt to so many different situations.
The apprenticeship is allowing me to develop my interpersonal and practical skills as well as my academic knowledge through the online seminars and workbook modules. I take a great deal of satisfaction from knowing that I’m not only gaining work experience, but also gaining qualifications.
It is an experience that I feel is shaping my future and helping me to build a strong foundation for my career. I'm really enjoying my apprenticeship and I am learning so much from this experience. I have received amazing support from my manager and my fellow partners and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to progress and learn whilst working’.
Since the start of this year we’ve been working with notgoingtouni.co.uk to identify ambitious school and college leavers like Antony who want to start a career in retail or look at different educational paths. We share the same passion of showing young people they can succeed without traditional Uni. At Starbucks we’re proud to feature in and support the launch of the new ‘NGTU Guide to Not Going to University’.
